  • Core clinical activities continue in treatment of breast cancer and disorders, endocrine surgery and management of malignant melanoma.
  • Multidisciplinary review clinics take place regularly.
  • Management taken place accordingly to general guidelines and protocols and in the context of clinical trials of surgery, adjuvant systemic treatment ( hormonal and chemotherapy).
  • Breast outpatients attendances increased to 3,470 in 2004.
  • Experience in Sentinel Node Biopsy for early breast cancer now exceeds 750 cases. SNAC Trial approaches completion of accrual.
  • Breast reconstruction offered to all eligible women.
  • 30% of breast cancer related procedures involve oncoplastic/reconstructive operations resulting in high levels of patient satisfaction, as confirmed by recent subjective and objective studies.
  • Same day multidisciplinary breast assessment in the Women’s Health Centre has increased demands on provision of mammography and ultrasound (1,743 and 1,902 last year respectively). New strategies for followup of women with breast cancer required.
  • All new cases of breast cancer entered onto the RACS Breast Cancer Audit.
  • Endocrine Surgical Service has a new clinic with onsite ultrasound and biopsy for thyroid diagnosis.
  • Intraoperative ultrasound has allowed 2/3 of patients to have minimally invasive parathyroidectomy.
  • Sentinel Node Biopsy now offered to patients with intermediate thickness melanoma as part of primary surgery.
  • Provision of Emergency General Surgical and Trauma Cover continues as a significant activity.
