The restructuring of the Medical Radiation Staff and Program at the University of South Australia in late 2005 removed the joint education coordinator’s position with RAH to create 1.2 FTE clinical educator’s positions.  They would contribute towards the clinical and supervisory components for all RT Medical Radiation undergraduates at 3 clinical sites in collaboration with our staff and the Private Departments.   We take this opportunity to thank Ms Courtney Oakes for her great contributions to the undergraduates’ programs and staff’s CPD activities in her past position as Education Coordinator.  Courtney has been successful in getting a Senior Clinical Radiation Therapist position in the United Kingdom.  Our Senior Radiation Therapist, who has the education portfolio, will focus on initiating research, postgraduate programs and CPD activities for the staff.  The Department is still waiting for the funding of a full time Education/Research Senior Radiation Therapist who can accelerate and assist the staff in the development of new techniques, research projects and CPD activities.

The department has an active role in training of medical students of the University of Adelaide. This is through the 4th and 5th year MSA program and 4th year Research proposals program. In the postgraduate area, not only has there been an unprecedented record of success in the Part I FRANZCR examinations (all 4 registrars who sat the exam in early 2005 passed, three of the 4 at their first attempt), but also 2 of the departmental staff were awarded their University doctorates in 2005. Congratulations to Drs Eric Yeoh and Daniel Roos on their Associate Professorships (University of Adelaide) and Ms Georgia Halkett on her PhD (University of South Australia).  In early 2006, our 2 excellent Radiation Therapists – Michelle Rybovic won a scholarship to pursue her Phd D in Medical Radiation at the University of Sydney, whilst Toula, having obtained her Masters in Information Technology, left to take up an IT position at the University of South Australia.

We currently have around 45 Radiation Therapy students rotating through our department fro their clinical placements.  The knowledge they gain from working in the department is invaluable as is the guidance, support and skills learnt from the staff they work with.  We have also been responsible for numerous student tutorials in the department, tutorials and lectures at the University of SA.

Staffs is encouraged to attend conferences and workshops to share skills, knowledge and new innovations, especially with the federal’s CPD fundings over the past 18
months had enabled many staff to participate.  Collectively, the staffs have brought back many new ideas for implementation.
