Introduction

Welcome to the Cardiothoracic Unit website of the Royal Adelaide Hospital. The staff within the unit have provided this online information with regard to the pre-operative, post-operative and convalescence phases of your cardiac surgery experience.
The highly-trained staff cares one-on-one for patients who have had surgery on their heart and other areas of the chest. Whether undergoing “bypass” or “valve” surgery, the pre-operative and post-operative care and management is very similar.

The Cardiothracic unit has an established relationship with the Wakefield Hospital, with a combined total of approximately 1000 open-heart procedures being performed during the year. The unit is one of the largest of its type in Australia and the major centre for open-heart surgery in South Australia. The unit also treats patients from the Northern Territory, and South East Asia, particularly Indonesia, patients are referred through AUShealth Services.
