Your intern year is 12 months of supervised clinical work in a limited registration capacity after you have completed your medical degree. It is a prerequisite to full registration.
Royal Adelaide Hospital provides you with accredited continuing medical education and vocational training combined with clinical and service responsibilities under supervision. Interns have the opportunity to participate in formal tutorials and teaching sessions which include simulation training. Term rotations are assigned by the Director of Medical Administration in consultation with the Director of Clinical Training
Rotations for interns throughout the year take into account the following:
- Stated preferences
- Mandatory requirements prescribed by the Medical Board of SA for full registration
- Overall balance of each individual roster throughout the year
- Provision of a suitably diverse training experience
Annual leave planning is carried out at the beginning of each year. Each intern will be invited to submit preferred dates for annual leave throughout 2008.
Interns at Royal Adelaide Hospital are allocated 3 weeks annual leave during their intern year. Stated leave preferences are taken into account when assigning annual leave in a manner which ensures the year’s rotations remain balanced. Mandatory rotations are also considered when assigning annual leave.
Request for Leave at short notice
Requests may be made for leave at short notice. If leave at short notice is requested due to a matter that is urgent and unanticipated, every effort will be made to assist you in taking leave.
Continuity of Service for Interns
For those interns who take a contract at Royal Adelaide Hospital in the year immediately following their intern year, Royal Adelaide Hospital will maintain continuity of service so that some entitlements, which would otherwise be lost, may continue to accrue such as long service leave, professional development leave, and sick leave.
Timesheets and Overtime
Intern timesheets are signed off centrally by Medical Administration. Patterns of overtime are regularly reviewed by Medical Administration and by Clinical Units.
Interns are important to and included in decisions making processes within Royal Adelaide Hospital. Each year interns are asked to elect representatives to the following Committees:
- Medical Education Committee
- Intern Panel
- Postgraduate medical Council of South Australia Junior Medical Officer Forum
- Intern Advocate Representatives
These are responsible roles and require representation of intern interests and concerns through the appropriate avenues to Medical Administration and to Senior Management of Royal Adelaide Hospital.
