Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery Unit

Introduction
The Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery Unit provides specialist expertise in hepatic, biliary and pancreatic surgery to the South Australian community and is one of the four surgical units at the Royal Adelaide Hospital providing general surgical services to the community along with its specialty services. These services include care of the victims of trauma.

Location
Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery is located in Ward R6 which is on Level 6 in the North Wing.

Clinical Services

Acute Inpatient Care
Acute general surgical patients are admitted through the Emergency Department in rotation with the other general surgical units. Such patients can be admitted directly at any time by contact with any of the consultants or the unit registrar.
Trauma victims are managed by the Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery Unit in conjunction with other specialist surgical units as directed by the patient’s injuries.
Patients with hepatic biliary or pancreatic diseases are admitted at any time dictated by the surgical needs of the patient. This can be facilitated by contacting either the registrar or any of the consultants directly.

Outpatient Clinics
Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery offers a service to outpatients within its defined area of specialisation as well as to patients with general surgical complaints.
Clinics are conducted on Wednesday mornings by all consultants. The clinics are located in Level 7 of the Outpatient Building. Outpatient appointments can be made by letter, by telephoning (08) 8222 5589 or Fax (08) 8222 5883.

E.R.C.P.
Diagnostic and therapeutic E.R.C.P. is available through the Gastrointestinal Investigation Unit. Appointments are made by completion of the appropriate referral form.

Liver Transplantation
Mr Paul Dolan is surgeon to the South Australian Liver Transplantation Service. He is available to advise on transplantation matters.

Training
Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery is an accredited unit for advanced training in General Surgery. It also offers post fellowship training in advanced hepatic biliary and pancreatic surgery, E.R.C.P. and liver transplantation. These positions are advertised in July/August and appointments are offered for the following year.
