Medical Unit 5
Introduction
General Medical Unit 5 is one of the five general medical units
of the Royal Adelaide Hospital. General medicine involves the
assessment and management of patients with complex or undifferentiated
medical problems.

Location
General Medical Unit 5 is located on Ward S6 which is on Level 6 in
the North Wing.
Clinical Services
Acute Inpatient Care
Acute admissions of a general medical nature are admitted to the
unit through the emergency department. General Medical Unit
5 provides general medical cover to the Emergency Department and
the rest of the hospital once every five days. Elective admissions
can also be arranged by discussion with consultant staff.
Approximately 1200 inpatients are treated each year.
Outpatient Clinics
The Outpatient Department is located on Level 7 of the Outpatient Block. General
Medical Unit 5 conducts clinics on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Bookings
for Outpatient Clinics require a referral from either the Emergency Department
or a general practitioner.

Training in Internal Medicine
The unit supports training in internal medicine at all levels
from undergraduate level to advanced physician training. Training
of other medical specialties and allied health professionals is
also undertaken.
