The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit is a combined Unit of the University of Adelaide , Royal Adelaide Hospital and South Australian Dental Service. Its staff hold appointments concurrently in these three organisations.

CORE SERVICES

The core business of the Unit is the provision of services for public patients and teaching and research for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Unit is the only specialist unit in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in South Australia .  Thus, it has a huge catchment area for specialist referral.  The total number of patients treated in the Royal Adelaide Hospital was 999 inpatients, which includes 571 day-stay patients. The scope of patients range from dentoalveolar surgery and dental treatment for seriously medically compromised patients through to major facial reconstruction following trauma and cancer surgery.  All outpatients are seen in the Adelaide Dental Hospital and 16,180 patients were seen in 2002/2003.

Teaching is directed at final year undergraduate students who do a four-week rotation through the Unit.  Lectures are also given to medical undergraduates. The Unit Registrars are all involved in teaching and research activities leading towards a higher university degree and college qualification.

RESEARCH

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit has a long and strong history in research.  All trainee staff are involved in research, many of these clinically orientated.

Our particular areas of research are:
