Drug and Alcohol Resource Unit
The Drug and Alcohol Resource Unit is a unit of the RAH and Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia. It offers assessments, management and referral for patients who are ill because of their use of alcohol and drugs. A specialist medical practitioner, a part time medical practitioner, psychiatric registrar and a nurse counsellor staff the unit. It can offer advice to other health units about their management of patients who have alcohol and drug problems. The Unit works very closely with the Departments of Psychiatry and Infectious Diseases and has a special interest in patients who have infectious diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis C and patients who have other mental illnesses in addition to their problems with alcohol and drugs.
Outpatient Services
The Unit outpatient clinics are on Wednesdays and Fridays and it is happy to receive referrals from doctors and other health workers in the community.

The unit can be contacted Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5:30pm on (08) 8222 5473. Outside these hours a message can be left on the answering service. If advice is needed urgently the RAH medical registrar on call should be consulted first. Dr Gaughwin can be contacted by medical staff through the hospital's switchboard. Advice about alcohol and drug problems can be obtained also by telephoning 1300 13 1340.
