Endocrine Bone Densitometer

The Unit operates a private, non-profit Norland Bone Densitometer for clinical and research purposes. This service provides bone mineral density (BMD) at the forearm, hip and spine for private patients referred from inside or outside the hospital. Charges are modest and there is no gap charge for those entitled to Medicare rebates. On sequential measurements, the system reports the mean change at three sites which appears to be more reliable than the change at any single site. We also provide whole-body bone density and body composition measurements by special arrangement. This service is managed by Professor  B E C Nordin, Visiting Consultant Physician.

Inpatient Services

These are provided in Ward S8 in the North Wing and include inpatient assessment of endocrine disorders and their complications, as well as expert management of endocrine emergencies such as diabetic ketoacidosis.

The Unit also provides a comprehensive consultative service to other units within the hospital. This includes advice about the management of endocrine disorders before, during and after surgery.
