Professor B.E. Christopher Nordin AO, MD FRCP FRACP DSc
Professor Chris Nordin has been working on calcium metabolism and osteoporosis in an academic setting for over 50 years. He is especially known for his emphasis on the relation between calcium deficiency and osteoporosis, particularly in postmenopausal women, and he is the author of the current WHO/FAO Dietary Calcium Recommendations which have now been adopted by Australia and New Zealand. His particular concerns at present are to reduce the high hip fracture rate in residential care facilities by providing residents with adequate doses of vitamin D and calcium, and to enable every woman at the menopause to know her bone density so that she can take steps to prevent osteoporosis developing in the future if it turns out to be on the low side. He believes that the key to this prevention programme is high calcium intake.
