Operating Room Service
Overview
Royal Adelaide Hospital
has one of the largest Operating Room Services within Australia.
The unit combines nursing,
medical and allied personnel in delivering a high standard of comprehensive
patient care to those who require operative procedures during their hospital
stay.
During the 1998/9 year,
over 16,000 operations were performed.
A high proportion of the
Operating Room patients are received through its affiliation with the University
of Adelaides Department of Surgery and the Trauma Service based at
the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH).
Royal Adelaide Hospital
is one of two Level I trauma centers in South Australia.
Operating Room Services
include 10 general purpose operating rooms, 2 urology procedure rooms, 3
emergency operating rooms (24 hour coverage), 2 cardiothoracic operating
rooms, 1 day surgery operating room, 1 eye operating room and 1 burns operating
room in which surgical procedures may be undertaken.
The Nursing Service
The Nursing Service at
RAH includes all the four aspects of Perioperative care - Anaesthetic, Day
Surgery, Recovery and Operating Room nursing. Each aspect has a separate
identity while still providing a coherent working relationship to ensure
high levels of patient comfort and safety.
Ms Judith Berry (Nursing
Director) heads the nursing service, and has both Clinical and Managerial
responsibilities.
The Unit has 6 Clinical
Nurse Consultants and 2 Nurse Managers who each have an area of responsibility.

The Medical Services
The Operating Room Service
has medical input from both the surgical and anaesthetic departments within
the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Limited obstetric and
peadiatric surgery is performed, usually in association with the Womens
and Childrens Hospital.
