A major burn is a serious injury, affecting both the mind and body of the burns survivor.

As medical skill advances, Burns Units are now thinking beyond survival to issues of preserving function, optimizing cosmetic appearance and restoring psychological wellbeing.  Treatment of burns patients now extends far beyond patient survival to include recovery of optimal function for the whole person.

Burns survivors are often concerned about:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Body image
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Upsetting memories about the trauma
  • Managing persistent pain
  • Strained relationships with loved ones
  • Coping with staring and negative comments
  • Return to work issues

The Burns Unit offers inpatient and outpatient psychology appointments for burns survivors and their families to address these concerns.   The psychologist provides assessment, treatment and consultation to other health professionals.

Please contact the Burns Unit if you would like to make an appointment or discuss any concerns.
