What do Psychologists do?

Psychologists seek to help people function better, whatever their life situation may be, and to prevent ill-health and other problems developing. Most of their clients are well-adjusted people experiencing stress or health problems and are seeking extra support or help with a difficult situation.

Psychologists are very aware of confidentiality especially when personal issues are discussed.

Clinical psychologists complete 4 years' basic (undergraduate) training, and then a master's or doctoral degree in clinical psychology. They specialise in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a wide range of psychological and general health concerns affecting individuals and families.

Clinical neuropsychologists complete 4 years' basic training, and then a master's or doctoral degree in clinical neuropsychology. They specialise in the assessment and rehabilitation of brain injury and brain impairment.

Whereas psychiatrists focus on the assessment and treatment of mental illness, psychologists specialise in the study of normal and abnormal human behaviour. This includes memory, learning, human development and the way people feel and react. Unlike psychiatrists (who are medical practitioners), psychologists in Australia do not prescribe medication to treat mental illness. While the roles of both disciplines are different, Psychologists and Psychiatrists often work together in a multidisciplinary team setting to help patients manage emotional issues.

Research and teaching are also integral to the Clinical Psychologist’s work role.
