Overview

Clinical Services

The Unit predominantly sees ambulatory patients for whom services are provided through both the Outpatients Department and office consultations. Dr Sheppeard provides services in Port Augusta and Port Pirie. Dr Penglis provides the Northern Territory Rheumatology Service and a consultative rheumatology service at Goolwa. Dr Cleland consults sessionally at the Stirling District Hospital in the Adelaide Hills. Susanna Proudman manages the Early Arthritis Clinic through RAH and her rooms. Inpatient admissions are required only for patients with particularly complex problems or disease crises requiring stabilisation.

Education & Peer Review

The Unit offers vocational training to basic physician trainees through case taking and short case rounds as well as rotational service placements. Continuing education activities cater for consultant rheumatologists and trainees. The ongoing education program and associated quality assurance activities are undertaken jointly with the Rheumatology Units of the North West Health Service and the Modbury Hospital. Contributions to under-graduate education include student teaching at rheumatology outpatients and theme-based, problem-oriented, self-directed learning exercises. Six groups of 12 to 15 students are taught per year in cycles of six weeks.
