Cancer Centre
The Cancer Centre promotes clinical research in all its units and also participates widely in numerous clinical trials programs. The Centre achieves funding from the Anti-Cancer Foundation, National Health and Medical Research Council and the pharmaceutical industry. Research into clinical practice was boosted by the award of a National Breast Cancer Centre associated centre grant which also provided a grant for the development of telemedicine. Specific research areas include studies of new anti-cancer drugs, ambulatory infusion chemotherapy, drug radiation reactions and supportive care and, in the Haematology Unit, stem cell and allogeneic transplants. Psychosocial aspects of cancer management and bioethical research are emerging areas. A new initiative is population-based epidemiological research focusing initially on smoking prevention strategies.
