Structure

Departmental Structure

The Social Work department provides a service to all areas of the hospital.

Within the Department, the social workers are divided into 4 teams. Each team has a senior social worker who is responsible for case load monitoring and emergency cover.

Social workers are assigned to specific areas within the hospital where they work as part of a multi-disciplinary team comprising of other Allied Health professionals, medical and nursing staff.

Aboriginal Liaison Officers (ALOS)

The Aboriginal Liaison Officers work collaboratively with the social workers and provide emotional, social and cultural support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders clients and their families who use the hospital.

The liaison officers see all the traditional patients and liaise with rural communities. One of the ALOS tasks is to collect these patients in particular at the airport or bus station and transport them to the hospital.

They also provide education to hospital staff so that cultural differences are taken into account.

Group Work

Social Workers are involved in various types of groups:

  • Radiotherapy Volunteer Support Group
  • Breast Cancer Support Group.
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation Support Group.
  • Heart/Lung Transplant Support Group.
  • Gynaecology Cancer Support Group.

If you are interested in any of these groups please contact the relevant Social Work Department on (int. +618) 8222 5338 for more information.
