Stroke, Neurology and Geriatrics Roster

Speech Pathologists are involved with the stroke, neurology and geriatric units at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. The Stroke Unit provides a team based approach for the care of people who have suffered a stroke. The team consists of Doctors, Nurses, a Physiotherapist, an Occupational Therapist, Speech Pathologist, Dietitian and a Social Worker. Members of the team formally meet twice a week to discuss the progress of each patient. In conjunction with the patient and his/her family, a plan is formulated for management and discharge.

As a Speech Pathologist working in this setting, time is spent working with patients to achieve safe swallowing and effective communication skills, (including speech clarity, the ability to understand what others say, and the ability to express one’s self
