Trauma Roster

Speech Pathology services on the Trauma Roster cover several hospital units – notably Neurosurgery, Spinal Injuries, Burns and Intensive Care/High Dependency.

Communication, cognitive and swallowing disorders are managed in this diverse group of patients.

Referrals to Speech Pathology frequently involve assessment and management of patients with closed head injuries, brain tumours, bleeding within the brain, or injuries, diseases or post surgical conditions which require the patient to have a tracheostomy.

The Speech Pathologist works closely with other members of the team including medical and nursing staff, dietitian, physiotherapist and occupational therapist.

Management is primarily on an in-patient basis although if appropriate, outpatient follow-up can be arranged within the Speech Pathology department.
