The Adelaide Voice Clinic

Specialist & PatientThe Adelaide Voice Clinic is a service offering specialist assessment, diagnosis, counselling and treatment advice to anyone experiencing problems with their voice. The clinic also offers follow-up review of patients who have undergone treatment for head & neck cancer.

The clinic is run by a speech pathologist and an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist who provide complete evaluation and diagnosis of voice disorders and make recommendations regarding management options.

Prior to attendance, patients are asked to complete a questionnaire to assist in understanding the nature, extent and history of the voice problem.

At the clinic, patients undergo an endoscopic examination – a procedure that provides a clear view and accurate assessment of the vocal mechanism, in particular, vocal fold structure and function.

Specialist & PatientThe nasendoscope is a narrow fibreoptic tube that conducts light. It is passed into the nose to allow the clinicians to assess the larynx and vocal folds at work. The scopes are coupled to a camera and television monitor, allowing everyone present to view the vocal folds at work. A local anaesthetic spray is often used to numb the nasal passage and the back of the throat. Additionally, a rigid scope that is positioned at the back of the mouth, may be used to gather further detailed information.

At completion of the assessment, patients are able to view their own vocal mechanism at work.
There is opportunity to discuss diagnosis and options for management.

A medical referral is required for this service.
