Speech Pathology at the RAH

Overview The Speech Pathology Department provides comprehensive evaluation, consultation and treatment for people with communication or swallowing disorders.

The department provides services for patients at its North Tce and Hampstead Campuses.

North Terrace

• The acute setting operates with specialist rosters in the areas of head and neck cancer, trauma and stroke, neurology and geriatrics.

• The department treats adults as both inpatients and outpatients.

• The Adelaide Voice Clinic is based at the North Terrace campus and offers specialist assessment diagnosis, counselling and treatment advice to people experiencing problems with their voice.

• Flinders University of South Australia (FUSA) jointly funds the student unit based at North Terrace. It sees both inpatients and outpatients as appropriate.

• The Speech pathology department is currently involved in two major collaborative research projects. An investigation into voice outcomes following thyroid and parathyroid surgery and a study of voice, swallowing and quality of life following radiotherapy for early glottic tumours.

• The department is located on the 2^nd floor of the linkway between the Allied health building and the Women’s Health Building.

Hampstead Centre

• Hampstead Centre is the rehabilitation annexe of the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

• The department sees inpatients only.

• The Speech Pathology Department is primarily involved in communication and swallowing recovery following stroke.

The Speech Pathology department is committed to providing a high quality service through ongoing staff development, appraisal, teaching and clinical research.
