Womens Health Centre

The Womens Health Centre is a unique concept in South Australia. It was established to provide a single venue for the coordinated management of medical conditions which are specific to women.

Location

Womens Health BuildingThe Womens Health Centre building is situated on the corner of North Terrace and Frome Road.  It was opened in 1935 and replaced the original Outpatients Department of the Hospital. During the second world war it provided sick quarters for the R.A.A.F until 1946 at which time the Hospital Board considered and rejected a proposal to make it a maternity hospital. Subsequently it housed the School Of Nursing and its library before extensive refurbishment in 1994.

The Womens Health Centre Outpatients Department occupies the ground floor of the building.

Environment

The Centre provides a unique environment for the women who make use of its facilities.  It is separate from the general outpatient department of the hospital and deals only with conditions which are experienced by women.

The location allows the comprehensive resources of the hospital to be drawn upon if necessary for the management of serious medical conditions while the welcoming  environment of the Centre facilitates the management of most conditions of women in a sensitive and friendly manner.

Consultation

Consultations are carried out in single rooms which have an attached changing room which opens into a private examination room.
