The patient move will took place in daylight hours over three days, from Monday 4 September to Wednesday 6 September 2017, with Thursday 7 September as contingency. Some outpatient, radiation oncology and day surgery services progressively started operating at the new Royal Adelaide Hospital from 14 August 2017. A range of options for the move were carefully considered by our clinicians and key agencies including SA Ambulance Service (SAAS), with all agreeing this is the safest option.

It is vital that patients and the public were aware of the move plans so they visited the right hospital if they needed care during the move period. With this in mind, a community awareness campaign was implemented prior to the move, and included advertising about the new location, flyers in patient letters advising of where to go, signage on the old site once it had closed, community service announcements and more.

Over six days in July, more than 5,500 South Australians were given the opportunity to tour the RAH. 

At this stage, further tours will not be conducted.

We ask that the general public refrain from visiting the hospital, unless they require urgent medical attention, have an outpatient appointment or are visiting a patient. This is especially important during the first few months while we are settling into our new home. Patient safety will be our top priority and we ask that all members of the public respect patient and staff privacy during this time.

Staff and visitors to the RAH will be able to travel to and from the hospital via train, bus or tram. Trams stop close to the main hospital entrance and a footpath connects the Adelaide Railway Station and the hospital. Bus stops are located along North Terrace, Port Road and Currie Street.

There are currently no plans for a new train stop. The Adelaide Railway Station is located within a seven minute walk from the RAH with regular tram services adjacent to the station that run along North Terrace. All access points to the hospital are via North Terrace. The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure is investigating whether additional public transport services may be required once the hospital is operational.

There are 2,300 car parking spaces on site which is approximately 370 more than the old RAH had access to. In addition to the 2,300 car parking spaces, there are also a number of short term (15-minute) patient pick-up and drop-off areas located on Levels 2 and 3.

There are 300 bicycle parking bays for use by staff and visitors located on Levels 2 and 3.

Overnight general inpatient rooms each have an inbuilt daybed for a family member or carer to stay overnight where clinically appropriate. Linen packs are available to hire for visitors staying overnight.
