Cardiothoracic Service (Adult cardiac and thoracic conditions)

 

The Cardiothoracic Service at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) is committed to providing high quality, patient centred, evidence based care for the surgical management of a variety of adult cardiac and thoracic conditions.

The unit was established in 1959 and currently undertakes approximately 600 cardiac and 300 thoracic surgeries each year and constantly achieves outcomes exceeding international guidelines.

Services

The unit provides a range of adult cardiothoracic surgical services including;

  • Primary and revision coronary artery grafting including endoscopic vein harvesting
  • Repair and replacement valvular surgery
  • Minimally invasive valve surgery
  • Complex Aortic Surgery
  • Adult congenital heart surgery
  • Minimally invasive lung cancer surgery, surgery for pneumothorax, surgery for hyperhidrosis, reconstructive surgery for pectus deformities and complex mediastinal tumour surgery.

Referrals

Emergency cases can present to the Emergency Department at any time.

The unit accepts GP and specialist referrals. Referrals are triaged depending on priority.

To refer a patient

Complete and fax your referral to the Cardiothoracic Unit via fax:

Urgent referrals should include a telephone call to the Cardiothoracic Unit Coordinator by telephone:

Referrals should include:

  • patient details
  • relevant clinical history
  • reason for referral
  • referrer details
  • any relevant reports; such as ECHO, Angiogram, CT, PET, PFTs

Academic activity and training

The department runs an advanced training program in Cardiothoracic Surgery recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and coordinates an internationally endorsed Cardiac Advanced Life Support program.

We also have an active research program and coordinate post graduate research with the University of Adelaide.
